Dr. Fawaz Akhras: Investing in people should take a priority

Dr. Fawaz Akhras, Co-Chairman of the British-Syrian Society, told Syria Times: "This is the second banking conference in Syria. The event is designed to get high level, internationally renowned economists, financials and bankers speak to their Syrian counterparts also to the public at large."

Additionally, the participation of more than 800 people is a strong indication of the participants` interest in attending this big event.
"The government has implemented quite a lot of the recommendations that were made in the first banking conference," Dr. Akhras stressed.

Raising the issue of youth and developmental opportunity, Akhras stressed the need to empower the young generation through graduate and post-graduate training programs.

He pointed out that investment should not be confined to projects, and that investing in people should take a priority.
"The development of the youth is of the utmost importance to a healthy reform program," he underlined.
"We are trying to create an internship and work experience program within the framework of the British-Syrian Society to help the youth in Syria gain the expertise necessary for them."
